If your dog is a puller or a jumper, a front-clip harness may provide greater control and minimize these behaviors. Collars may restrict the airways of dogs affected by tracheal collapse, as well as brachycephalic dog breeds—think Pugs and Boston Terriers—so a harness may be a safer option. Narrow-skulled dogs or breeds with a thick neck are often masters at slipping out of a collar—and thus may be less likely to escape from a securely fitted harness.
Sizing for a Harness: Circumference at the widest part of the chest but may also require taking the measurement around the neck, as well as the dog’s weight. Weight should never be the only factor in choosing a dog harness, as the relation between weight and chest size may differ considerably between breeds. Adjust the straps for a secure fit—ensure your dog cannot slip free, and that the harness does not shift from side to side. A properly fitted harness should not pinch or chafe. As with collars, two fingers should fit between the harness straps and your dog’s body.
